Barnum Sets Single-Season Points Record at Clarkson, Knights Fall Late 12-11

Potsdam, NY – Thanks to a last second ducking maneuver to get around a help defender, Ella Graff scored with 17 seconds left in the fourth quarter to lead Rensselaer past the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team 12-11 in the Golden Knights' final contest of the 2025 season.

Clarkson concluded its campaign with a record of 9-8 overall and 3-7 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers improved to 9-6 and 6-4 in conference games.

Rensselaer scored the first two goals of the game in the opening five minutes, but near the 10-minute mark the Knights scored while up a player to tie the contest. Two minutes later, Gabby Cranfield found Morgan Kenna in front for a goal to put the Knights up a score, and Clarkson would not trail again until the final goal of the contest.

Clarkson expanded its lead to 4-2 through the end of the first quarter and still held a two-goal lead at the half thanks to a last second score on a free-position shot by Bella Perrigo. The opening goal of the second half for the Knights was the fourth point of the game for Madelynn Barnum, helping her set a new single-season record for points in a season at Clarkson, surpassing the mark of Christine Wright set in 2016 (86). Barnum wasn't done in the period, scoring three more times in the next six minutes to push the margin to four goals (10-6). However, the Engineers scored twice in a stretch of less than 30 seconds later in the quarter to get back within two once again.

RPI opened the fourth quarter with two quick goals from Ella Graff, assuring that it would not spend the entirety of the period trying to play catch-up. Lauren Shanahan put Clarkson back up by a goal with 4:32 off the clock, but third player-up goal of the game for the visitors was scored with a little under six minutes remaining to tie the contest.

Clarkson had a couple of chances to reclaim the lead with under two minutes to go but a free-position shot was off the mark and another quick attempt was saved by RPI goalie Jenny Canfield. Once the ball was recovered by the Engineers with a little over a minute to go, they ran the clock down, allowing Ella Graff to rush left and scoot underneath a check attempt to score in close.

The Knights ended the game with a 29-23 lead in shots, though shots on goal were tied at 19 apiece. RPI controlled more draws (15-11), but the Knights won the battle on the ground (18-13) and had a plus-six tally in turnovers.

Madelynn Barnum scored seven points, notching six goals and one assist in the contest, to end the season with 90 points, while also chipping in four groundballs, five draws, and three caused turnovers. Lauren Shanahan added four groundballs and also posted a goal and an assist. Rylee Ganter caused three turnovers.

For RPI, Graff finished with seven points, all of them coming on goals. Quinn Wollard also posted four goals for the Engineers. Jenny Canfield made eight saves.
