Knights Fall Twice in New England

Beverly, MA – A long road trip did not come out the way the Clarkson University Volleyball team had hoped, as the Golden Knights suffered a pair of losses in Northern Massachusetts, falling in three to Endicott College and then in five to Salve Regina University on Saturday.

The Golden Knights saw their record move to 3-6 on the year after dropping their match to Endicott in straight sets (25-20, 25-15, 25-18) and then to Salve Regina in five (20-25, 25-20, 21-25, 26-24, 15-13). Clarkson looks to regroup next weekend, beginning with a home match against Castleton on Friday.

Clarkson's offense had trouble putting the ball down against the Gulls in the opening match of the day, recording 18 kills in 83 attempts, while Endicott put forth 45 kills. The team also struggled on its serve receive as Endicott notched 15 aces.

Conley Burns scored seven kills against just one error for a .261 hitting percentage while Marin Hangliter added five kills. Ashley Currier picked up 12 assists and also had eight digs. Hangliter led the way defensively with nine digs.

The second match saw the Knights pick up the pace offensively, but Clarkson lost a match in which it led two sets to one for the second time this year, including a late run by the Seahawks in the fifth set. Although Clarkson trailed in the middle points for much of the fourth set, the Knights nearly ended the match before requiring a fifth. Clarkson had several two-point advantages late, including a match point at 24-22 in the fourth thanks to a kill from Conley Burns, but Salve rattled off four straight, including a pair of aces from Lauren Shurling and then a final kill by Lucy Swanson. In the fifth, the Knights led by six (11-5) as the offense was humming along with seven kills in that stretch. However, the Seahawks scored the final six points of the match thanks to three kills and two aces before recording the final point on a Knights' attack error.

Clarkson hit .276 in the match with just three attack errors against 38 kills in the final three sets, which normally would see a team win going away. However, the Seahawks had 43 kills in that same stretch.

Conley Burns scored 29 kills in the five-set match against Salve Regina, the most by a Clarkson player since Carol LaMarche took over as coach in 2016. The only other player in that stretch to top 25 kills was Rachael Aird, who did so twice (2016, 2017). The 29 kills by Burns are also the most put up by a player in the Liberty League since the 2019 campaign. The large product was not just the result of high volume, as Burns hit .431 in the match (29-4-58).

In addition to Burns' output, Marin Hangliter scored 15 kills and Ainslie Reimer had 10 kills. Ashley Currier picked up 57 assists and Emma Cortez led the defense with 16 digs.
