Knights Enjoy Saturday Sweep to Improve to 3-0 on Weekend

Oneonta, NY – For the fourth time in 2025, the Clarkson University Volleyball team has worked its way back to .500, finishing off its weekend with three consecutive wins including two on Saturday afternoon over SUNY Cobleskill and Hartwick College.

The Golden Knights moved to 6-6 and will face William Smith College and Ithaca College next weekend as the squad opens Liberty League play. Clarkson swept SUNY Cobleskill in its first match on Saturday (25-14, 25-14, 25-8) and then walked away with a five-set win over Hartwick (24-26, 25-19, 25-10, 23-25, 15-13).

In the opening match of the day, the Knights rarely trailed as the team posted a .330 hitting percentage in the match. Clarkson led by six in the first set near the midway point (13-7) thanks to block assists from Ainslie Reimer and Ashley Currier, but the Fighting Tigers creeped back into the set, falling behind by only three (15-12) and later by five (19-14), but still within striking distance. However, the Knights put their foot on the gas to close out the opening game as Marin Hangliter, Grace Hanson, and Ainslie Reimer combined for five kills in the last six points (joined by an ace from Jordyn Leader) to close out the set.

The second was similar to the first, as Cobleskill was down 19-13 and certainly still in the game. Following a service error by the Tigers for a side out, Clarkson came back with a pair of aces from Leader and kills from Hanson and Hangliter to build a double-digit lead, and shortly thereafter ended the set. The third game saw another streak, but this one closed out the match neatly. Up 14-8, Clarkson scored the final 11 points of the set, including a stretch of four straight aces by Olivia Baxter. She had the chance to end the match with a fifth, but instead if was Leader who put down a kill to end things.

Leader hit .400 in the first match of the day (5-1-10) and also posted three aces. Olivia Baxter had five aces and a team-best 12 digs. Grace Hanson led the offense with a .526 hitting percentage (10-0-19) while Conley Burns (eight kills) and Marin Hangliter (seven kills) also chipped in and each added seven digs on the defensive side. Ashley Currier also tossed in seven digs to go along with her 26 assists.

For Cobleskill, Hallie Gasner led the offense with a 5-0-19 attack line, Jade Ward had nine assists, and Baylee Kirschberg had eight digs and three kills.

The second match of the day for the Knights versus Hartwick was a tighter affair, though it did not start out that way. Clarkson rolled out to a 9-3 lead in the opening set and still maintained that six-point advantage later on following block assists from Reimer and Currier. However, Hartwick began to click better offensively and pulled back to within one (15-14). Clarkson was able to maintain its lead until near the end, when the Hawks finally tied the set at 22-22. Shelby Schwartz followed with a kill to give Hartwick its first lead, but Clarkson rallied back to tie the set at 24-24. That was the final burst for the Knights in that set, as Hartwick scored on a block and an ace to close it out.

Some similarities to the first set occurred in the second, as Clarkson again had a six-point lead at 12-6, though that was produced by Hartwick. Clarkson led 7-6 and picked up one point on a kill, but the following four points came on unforced attack errors by the Hawks. Clarkson still led by six later on (17-11) only to see Hartwick rally twice to within one point, including at 18-17. This time around, Clarkson had enough to hold off the Hawks, picking up an ace from Leader and a kill by Reimer to close out the set by six.

The third game was virtually over before it began with some fast points coming off the serve of Marin Hangliter. Clarkson rolled out to an 11-0 lead with four of those points coming off aces from the senior Hangliter. The Hawks briefly cut the deficit to single digits at 11-2, but the Knights never slowed up and maintained a double digit lead for the remainder of the game, settling for a 15-point win.

In stark contrast to the third, Hartwick led for the majority of the fourth set. The Hawks had modest leads throughout, but it took until the midway point at 15-15 for Clarkson's first time drawing even. It appeared that late burst would be enough for the Knights to close things out in four sets, as the team had a touch of momentum on its side, taking the lead on a number of occasions, including a 22-20 advantage after a kill from Grace Hanson. Hartwick had enough in the tank to come back once again, though, recording five of the final six points, including staying away on a few attack errors by the Knights to end the game.

The fifth set saw the Knights trail early and for most of the points, as Hartwick built a three-point lead (11-8) following an ace from Sophia Palladino. The Hawks still led by three two points later at 12-9, only to see Clarkson rally with four straight, with solid offense and kills from Leader, Hangliter, and Burns. Hartwick tied it at 13, but Conley Burns delivered two hard kills to the back row, one that fell inside the back line and another that was shanked backwards, ending the match in five sets.

Clarkson had three hitters post 15 kills or more against Hartwick, as Hangliter finished with 17 kills, Burns ended with 16 kills, and Hanson followed with 15 kills and an efficient .407 hitting percentage. Hangliter also added in five aces, one more than Olivia Baxter's four. Ashley Currier ran the offense with 55 assists and added three block assists, and Jordyn Leader notched six blocks (one solo, five block assists). The back-and-forth created plenty of opportunities for digs, headed by Olivia Baxter's 32 in that category. Burns tossed in 21 digs, Hangliter added 18 more, and Emma Cortez contributed 16 digs.

Hartwick had four hitters in double figures as Shelby Swartz and Lucy Walker led the way with 12 each. Braelyn Hornick had 43 assists and 15 digs and Malia Dake added 23 digs. Sophia Palladino also contributed 10 kills and 20 digs for the Hawks.
