Clarkson Downs Arizona State in Men's Hockey Action at Cheel Arena

A three-point night from sophomore Sam Vigneault, including a pair of goals, helped the Clarkson University Hockey team break out of a five-game winless stretch as the Golden Knights defeated Arizona State 3-2 in non-league action before 2,196 fans at Cheel Arena on Friday night.

Clarkson, which improves to 6-4-2 overall, will face off against the Sun Devils (5-7-0) again on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Vigneault scored the Knights' first two goals, for his first career multiple-goal game, and assisted on senior Christian Powers' game-winning tally midway through the final frame to lift the Green and Gold to their first victory since October 24.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Clarkson wasted little time to begin the second-period scoring when Vigneault knocked in his own rebound at 1:43. Powers and junior A.J. Fossen assisted.

Arizona State, in its first year as a Division I program, came right back with a pair of goals less than a minute apart to take the lead. The Sun Devils, who won twice at Lake Superior in their last games before traveling to Potsdam, got on the scoreboard at 4:31 with a tally by Ryan Belonger.  Jack Rowe made it 2-1 for the visitors at 5:26.

The Knights tied it back up at 13:18 when Vigneault skated hard down the left wing after taking a pass from sophomore defenseman Kelly Summers and slipped in a shot from the top of the crease for his fourth goal of the season.

Powers broke the deadlock at 9:29 of the third when he took a centering pass in the slot from Vigneault and fired in his third goal of the season and second game-winner of the year. Fossen also assisted for his second helper of the night.

Clarkson outshot Arizona State 39-24.  Senior Greg Lewis made 22 saves in his second start of the season to go to 1-0-1 on the year. Ryland Pashovitz made 36 stops for the Sun Devils.

In a game which saw just one penalty called, the Knights went 0-of-1 on the power play. Clarkson skated in its first penalty-free game since October 31, 2014 in a 2-2 tie at St. Lawrence.
