CU Women's Lacrosse Preview - vs. Bard/Vassar (4/15-16)

Receiving votes in the national poll and currently residing in second place in the Liberty League, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team looks to solidify its position in the conference standings when the team hosts Bard and Vassar this weekend at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights, 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the Liberty League, saw a nine-game winning streak come to an end with an overtime loss against Union College last Saturday. Bard, Friday afternoon's opponent, comes in at 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference, while Vassar is 5-4 and 1-2 prior to facing St. Lawrence on Friday.

Clarkson is particularly stingy on defense, allowing just six goals per contest, which ranks 13th in the nation. Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Gladd has been a big part of that drop as she is 12th in the country in goals against average (5.93) and 28th in save percentage (.521), with both figures leading the Liberty League. Senior Christine Wright also finds herself among the national leaders in several categories including total assists (34, eighth), assists per game (3.09, sixth), total points (65, 16th) and points per game (5.91, 14th). She became the program's all-time leading scorer last weekend as her league-leading 65 points pushed her to 266 in her career thus far. She also is among the team's leaders in draws (24), groundballs (17) and caused turnovers (13). Junior Ashley Flick has tallied 34 goals with eight assists and 42 points to go along with 19 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers, and her classmate Kate Dillon has produced 17 goals and 10 assists for 27 points. Sophomore Taylor Collins has already surpassed her point total from last year with 24 tallies on 13 goals and 11 assists, while leading the team with 27 draw controls and 20 groundballs. Hanna Gleason is the team's top defender with 16 groundballs and nine caused turnovers.

The Knights won the previous four meetings against Bard, outscoring the Raptors 73-26 since the team joined the league in 2012. The Raptors are led on offense by Nicole Ellin, who ranks 10th in the conference in goals per game (2.3 gpg). Overall, Ellin has 28 points, 26 groundballs, 38 draws and 13 caused turnovers, ranking in the top four in the conference in the middle two categories. Casey Witte has 24 points on 21 goals and three assists with 26 draws, and Alexandra Clarke has contributed 22 points (15-7) with 34 groundballs and 16 caused turnovers. Kaylynn Tran has been busy in the Bard crease with a league-best 7.80 saves per game, but also allows 12.30 goals per game with a .388 save percentage and 25 groundballs.

Vassar has won 12 of the previous 16 meetings against Clarkson, with the Knights last picking up consecutive victories in 2012 and 2013. The Brewers boast the top offense in the conference with 12.67 goals per game, but also allow 11.22 goals per contest. Isabelle Goldstein ranks third in the league in points per game (4.11) with 17 goals and 20 assists for 37 points. She also is among the team leaders in with 17 groundballs, 15 caused turnovers and 19 draw controls. Storm Sideleau is Goldstein's most frequent target of passes, as she has accounted for a team-high 25 goals. Julia Trudell is tied for second with Sideleau for points with 28 (18-10) and Kim Mulvehill (16-7-23) is also a constant offensive threat. Defensively, Fiona MacLeod (15 caused turnovers) and Darby Stahl (12 caused turnovers) are pesky on the other end. Kristin Caolo sees the majority of time in the Vassar crease, denying 6.89 shots per game with a 10.88 goals against average and .428 save percentage.
