Burns Spins Shutout for Knights Against Colby-Sawyer

Auburndale, FL – Allowing just four hits over seven innings, senior Nate Burns struck out 12 hitters in the Clarkson University Baseball team's first game in Florida, recording a 12-0 shutout over Colby-Sawyer College on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 1-3 on the season while Colby-Sawyer is now 3-7. Clarkson was held scoreless in the first and seventh innings, but scored at least one run in each of the other frames, including five in the second inning.

In the top of the second, freshman Jonathan Irons reached on an error and found himself on second after a strikeout and fly out. However, classmate Sean Eddington drew a walk to continue the rally and Clarkson began to get to the Colby-Sawyer starter. Joe Stockman doubled to left to plate the first run, and Eddington scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Caleb Doyle then walked to put runners on the corners and Kyle Locklear followed with a double to left-center for a 3-0 Clarkson lead. Mike Mieczkowski then plated a pair with a two-run single to put Clarkson up by five.

The Knights scored three more in the top of the third as Stockman singled home another run and Doyle drove home two with a single to put Clarkson up 8-0. One inning later, the Knights scored another run as Ernesto Ruiz-Sierra doubled home Irons. In the fifth, Irons singled in another run and Mike Nee scored on a two-out error to put Clarkson up 11-0. The Knights added one more run in the sixth when Danny Cantor scored on a passed ball after reaching on a walk earlier in the inning.

The Knights drew nine walks and recorded 12 hits overall as each hitter, whether starter or substitution, reached base at least once. Doyle was 2-for-4 with a walk, Nee went 2-for-5, and Joe Stockman was 3-for-4. Stockman, Doyle and Mieczkowski each drove in two runs in the game. Burns struck out 12 and did not allow a walk in his complete-game shutout, scattering four hits.
