Knights Drop Doubleheader Against Hamilton, 8-2 and 7-5

Clinton, NY – Doomed by one big inning in each game, the Clarkson University Baseball team suffered a pair of defeats at Hamilton College on Sunday, dropping the opener 8-2 and the nightcap 7-5.

The Golden Knights, 0-3 on the season, will be back in action next week in warmer climates, playing in Central Florida.

In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, Hamilton plated eight runs, all with two outs, in the fourth inning. The second contest saw the Continentals start with six runs in the first inning, five of which were unearned. Outside of those two frames, Hamilton scored only one run in its other 10 turns at bat.

Much like Saturday's game, Clarkson had its chances in the first game, leaving six runners on in the first four innings, including two on and just one out in the third and a bases loaded situation in the fourth. It appeared as if the Knights would push one across in the top of the fourth when Joe Stockman was hit on the hand to force a run across. After a pair of conferences by the umpiring crew, however, the pitch was ruled a foul ball, and Stockman ended up popping up.

It likely mattered little, as Hamilton pushed eight runs across in the fourth, though the Continentals nearly went down without a score. Starting pitcher Kyle Locklear had pitched well up until the fourth, but the sophomore lost a bit of his control after a bloop infield single and a pair of walks. With a 2-2 count and two outs, Ethan Wallis lifted a fly to the right-center gap that just ended up out of the reach of a diving Tommy Bianchi. The ball bounced further to the right and all the way to the fence, allowing for an incredibly rare inside-the-park grand slam. Hamilton continued to string hits together after that, pushing four more across for an eight-run frame.

The Knights picked up a run in both the fifth and the sixth, as Mike Nee drove in a run after walks from Bianchi and Michael Mieczkowski, and Mieczkowski forced home a run when he was hit by a pitch in the sixth after Joe Stockman, Michael Tito and Bianchi had loaded the bases with walks.

In game two, Mark Connor struggled with his control by walking three in the first inning and the defense behind him didn't help as Hamilton scored sixth in the frame. The big blow in the inning was a two-run double by Ethan Murphy. The Continentals scored another in the second and appeared on their way to another rout, but Glenn Stever came on in relief and pitched well to keep the Knights in the game. Stever finished the game by allowing just three hits and a walk over 4.1 innings, striking out four along the way.

Eventually, Clarkson would begin to come through on offense, scoring three in the fifth and two in the sixth. Mieczkowski doubled in both Mike Nee and Caleb Doyle, who had opened the fifth with hits, and he later came around on a sacrifice fly from Jonathan Irons. The next inning saw Joe Pagano triple and come home on a throwing error, while Doyle, who had reached on that error, also scored on another Hamilton miscue. In the seventh, Clarkson brought the tying run to the plate twice as Irons reached on a walk and was in scoring position, but the Knights were unable to knot up the game.
