Clarkson Drops Pair to Oswego

Potsdam, NY – The bats were busy again for the Clarkson University Baseball team, but the Golden Knights found themselves on the short end of a doubleheader sweep, dropping two games to Oswego State, 17-13 and 9-4 at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights saw their record evened at 8-8 overall and Oswego State moved to 9-1. Clarkson plays a four-game set against University of Rochester this weekend, with the first two games played at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights put together a bullpen game in the opener against the Lakers, and Oswego jumped out to a 7-0 lead through the first five innings. The Lakers scored a pair on a two-run double by Ryan Enos in the first and then Ryan Weiss had the big blow in the fifth with a grand slam. Clarkson got back into the game with five runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth. Joe Pagano singled home Michael Mieczkowski and Jake Millich delivered a bases-clearing three-run double before coming in on a single by Kent Wilson.

Oswego responded with two in the seventh, but a line drive single from Robert Whalen emptied the bases as the ball was misplayed by the Lakers right fielder. Zachary Carpin then doubled to left to score Whalen, tying the game at 9-9.

A quiet eighth inning led to an outlandish ninth. Oswego scored eight runs and appeared to have put the game away, but the Knights produced four more runs to make things interesting. Millich drove in a run with a groundout, Wilson pushed a run across with a sacrifice fly, and Jonathan Irons scored two with a single to put the final margin at four runs.

Whalen finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two driven in, Millich had four RBI, and Wilson, Mieczkowski, Irons, and Carpin each had two hits. For the Lakers, Paul Tammaro was 5-for-6 with three runs scored, Ryan Enos was 2-for-4 with four RBI, Ryan Weiss was 3-for-6 with six RBI, and Brendon Frank went 3-for-7 with three runs scored.

Game two was quiet until the fifth inning as weekend starters Griffin Tubbs and Anthony Van Fossen locked up in the early going. Tubbs threw four perfect innings for Clarkson and Van Fossen kept the Knights scoreless for the first five innings. However, Oswego scored three runs in the fifth to get on top when Kyle Lauria scored on a wild pitch and Julian Drew scored two with a single. The Lakers added two more in a two-run single by Lauria in the sixth, but the Knights rallied in the bottom half of the inning. Two hit by pitch and two walks forced a run home and Carpin drove in a pair with a double to left. Colby Brouillette then grounded out to drive in another run and make the score 5-4.

Oswego took advantage of some free bases in the top of the seventh as a passed ball and wild pitch accounted for two runs with the other two coming on a two-run single from Ryan Enos.

Carpin finished the second game going 2-for-3 as he was the only player on either side to have more than one hit in the contest.
