Golden Knights Drop Pair in Michigan to Elmhurst and 9th-Ranked Hope

Holland, MI – Playing in its toughest tournament of the season, the Clarkson University Volleyball team came up short in a pair of matches, first falling to Elmhurst in three sets (25-16, 26-24, 25-23) and then to ninth-ranked Hope (25-14, 25-13, 25-16) on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 3-5 on the year, while Elmhurst improved to 3-3 after its match with Clarkson, and Hope moved to 8-1.

In the first match of the weekend for the Knights, Elmhurst was able to score the key points late in the match to claim the sweep. In the first set, the Bluejays rushed out to 10-point lead, only to see Clarkson cut the margin to as few as four (18-14). However, Elmhurst won seven of the last nine points for a nine-point win.

The second set saw each team go on runs, as Elmhurst picked up six of the first eight points, only to watch Clarkson win 14 of the next 17. With the set tied 9-9, Clarkson scored seven straight, including a pair of aces from Isabelle Crow. The Knights led by six a few points later and appeared on the verge of taking the set, but Elmhurst scored eight straight to regain the lead. The Knights did win several more points and had a set-point after Kristin Werdine delivered a kill from the back row. Unfortunately for Clarkson, Katelyn Bower delivered back-to-back kills and an attack error by the Knights ended the second set.

The third set was similar to the second, as the Bluejays enjoyed an early four-point advantage, but Clarkson went on an 11-4 run, with back-to-back aces from Ashley Currier putting Clarkson up 17-14. The Knights still led by three two points later, but Elmhurst scored the next four to regain the lead. The Bluejays looked like they would close the set and match out quickly from there, but an error and a combined block from Olivia Freer and Allyson Treichel put the Knights within one (24-23). However, Bower scored on a kill again to end the match.

Emma Baxter finished with 21 digs, including 12 in the second set alone, while Alexandra Bergantz added nine digs. Isabelle Crow contributed 17 assists, 8 digs, and 4 aces, while Ashley Currier contributed nine assists and three aces. On offense, Sara Galante scored nine kills, Allyson Treichel produced eight kills, and Kristin Werdine added seven kills

For Elmhurst, Elise Rossing struck for 11 kills against just two errors in 23 attempts, and Keely Larson was even better, going 9-1-15 with four block assists. Erin Murray led the offense with 21 assists and Kellyn Kennedy had 11 assists and six service aces. Payton Ceh chipped in 15 digs for Elmhurst.

Against Hope College, the Knights' offense struggled with unforced errors while the Flying Dutch chugged along with their hitters, keeping Clarkson at a safe distance. In the first set, Hope picked up a solid lead in the early going, but Clarkson drew back within five (15-10) near the midway point of the set. After winning three of the next five points for a six-point advantage, the Flying Dutch closed out the set on a 7-1 run.

In the second set, the Flying Dutch won 15 of the first 19 points and held at least an eight-point margin for the remainder of the game. The third set saw Hope jump out to a 6-0 lead, but the Knights played even with the ninth-ranked team in the country for the next 14 points. However, Hope went on 7-0 run and put the game away.

Versus Hope, Kristin Werdine had six kills and an ace, while Emma Baxter contributed 11 digs and was followed closely by Isabelle Crow who had 10 digs. Hope's Lauren Lee had 33 assists and two aces, spreading around the offense to hitters Emma Post and Annie Lockett, as each had nine kills.
