Knights Stay Unbeaten in Liberty League with Sweep of RIT

Rochester, NY – Utilizing a strong service game and an equally impressive serve receive, the Clarkson University Volleyball team swept RIT 25-21, 25-13, 25-15 to remain unbeaten in Liberty League play.

The Golden Knights improved to 9-6 overall and 4-0 in conference matches while the Tigers dropped to 5-12 and 1-1. Clarkson takes on William Smith College on Saturday afternoon in Geneva, NY.

The first set was tied six times overall, though four of those knots came in the early points. Clarkson broke the fourth tie with three straight points (9-6), causing RIT to take a timeout. The Tigers stayed close for the next handful of points, only to see Clarkson edge out to six (19-13) after a kill from Julia Bennett. However, RIT rattled off six straight to tie the set, but could not find enough to take the lead, as Isabelle Crow picked up two straight points with a kill and an ace. Though the set was tied at 21, two errors gave the lead back to Clarkson and the set ended with an ace from Sara Galante and a kill by Marin Hangliter.

Two key runs allowed Clarkson to run away with the second set. Up just one (5-4), Clarkson notched five straight, highlighted by two kills and two blocks. Although RIT got back within three (12-9), the Knights scored eight of the next nine points, almost entirely due to an impressive offensive display from Clarkson. In the stretch, Hangliter had three kills, Allyson Treichel snagged two kills, while both Julia Bennett and Sara Galante recorded a kill. That allowed Clarkson to double up the Tigers (20-10) and cruise to the second-set win.

The third game saw RIT win six of the first nine points for its largest lead of the match (6-3), but that evaporated quickly as Clarkson scored six straight, capped by a pair of aces from Hangliter. That margin remained for a stretch (15-12) before the Knights picked up six of the next seven, three on RIT errors and three on Clarkson kills. That proved to be enough to dispel the hopes of a comeback by the Tigers, as Clarkson closed out another set by double digits.

The Knights finished with 11 aces overall while the Tigers were able to muster just two. Both teams had slow starts on offense, but Clarkson found its way in the last two sets, hitting .321 in the final two games.

Marin Hangliter had a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs, while also adding in four aces. Cecilia Velardi also posted four aces to go along with six digs. Julia Bennett hit .545 in the match (6-0-11) while also chipping in five total blocks. Isabelle Crow had 28 assists, 10 digs, three blocks, and a pair of aces.

For RIT, Sydney Neff had 22 assists and two blocks. Cat Vento hit .455 (6-1-11), but no other player for the Tigers hit above .100 in the match.
