Knights Suffer Five-Set Defeat Versus William Smith

Geneva, NY – It was a tale of two matches in one for the Clarkson University Volleyball team, as the Golden Knights dominated the first two sets, but nevertheless dropped a 3-2 decision to William Smith as the Green and Gold fell 16-25, 11-25, 26-24, 25-22, 15-10 in Liberty League play on Saturday.

The Golden Knights fell to 9-7 overall and 4-1 after suffering their first loss in conference this fall, while the Herons moved to 9-7 and 2-1. Clarkson is back in Potsdam next weekend, heading to take on SUNY Potsdam across town on Friday and then hosting Union College on Saturday.

In the first two sets, the Knights were steady from the service line while capitalizing on mistakes by William Smith. The Herons had 20 attack errors against just 16 kills while Clarkson limited its mistakes with a line of 19-6-65 as well as seven aces. Clarkson had arguably its best offensive showing in the third set with 14 kills on just 31 attempts, but the Herons righted themselves offensively, hitting 12-4-32 with four aces. The Knights led by two late (23-21), but the Herons scored three straight to take a late lead. Isabelle Crow picked up a kill to tie the set, but back-to-back kills from Malya Sayre breathed new life into the Herons' hopes.

In the fourth, Clarkson again led late, up by four (20-16) with the final stretch awaiting, but the Herons rallied with six straight, picking up points as the Knights' offense gave up points on unforced errors. That late run was enough as William Smith won by three in the fourth.

The Knights scored four of the first six points in the deciding game, but William Smith's offense hit another level, swinging better than .500 as a team with a 12-1-19 line.

Marin Hangliter scored 13 kills and added 11 digs, while Sara Galante had 13 kills and a team-best 19 digs. Julia Bennett recorded seven kills and three block assists and Isabelle Crow had 42 assists and 11 digs. Both Emma Cortez and Cecilia Velardi had three aces apiece, and Velardi added 12 digs. Abigail Spector also contributed 18 digs.

For William Smith, Malya Sayre had 19 kills and 11 digs, Jaylynn McCarthy scored 13 kills to go along with nine digs, and Elaina Wamhoff put up 41 assists, 12 digs, and four block assists.
