Knights Stay Undefeated with 18-15 Win Against Western New England

St. Leo, FL – After racing out to a big lead, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team weathered a strong comeback by its opponents on Monday, as the Golden Knights improved to 5-0 with an 18-15 victory over Western New England University.

The Golden Knights remained unbeaten in five contests, though the game against Western New England was the closest of the season and only the second that was within single digits. The Golden Bears fell to 3-2 on the campaign.

It took just 23 seconds for Clarkson to get on the board as Sofie Mangino tallied in the opening minute of Monday's contest, and the Golden Knights had at least a two-goal lead for nearly 59 minutes when Hailey Millington scored on a free-position attempt at the 13:55 mark of the first quarter. The Knights scored five goals in a stretch of barely three minutes later on in the period, and held a 9-2 advantage at the first break.

Clarkson increased its lead to 10-2 when Madelynn Barnum scored at the 14:14 mark of the second quarter, but just like that, the Knights' offense went quiet. Clarkson scored 10 goals in the first 16 minutes of the game, but was kept off the scoreboard for the final 14 minutes of the second period, with the Golden Bears taking advantage with four goals, cutting the margin to four at the half.

Western New England continued to chip away and was within two twice near the end of the third quarter, having outshot the Golden Knights 16-9 in the middle two periods of the game. Clarkson's offense got rolling again late in the third on an extra-attacker chance that resulted in a goal by Lauren Shanahan with just 37 seconds remaining. The momentum continued into the fourth, with Mangino, Barnum, and Shanahan each scoring in the first two minutes of the final quarter. That extra breathing room proved to be plenty as the last two goals from the Golden Bears only closed the gap of the score, but never really challenged the Knights in the waning moments.

Shanahan finished with six points on five goals and an assist and also posted 12 draw controls and two caused turnovers. Hailey Millington found the back of the net for four goals and also scooped up four groundballs, while Barnum had three scores and six draws. Chrissy Benedict (3-0-3), Mangino (2-1-3), and Julia Lavarnway (1-2-3) also scored three points apiece.

For Western New England, Maggie Holt scored four goals and had four draws, Hannah Jarvis had three goals and three draws, and both Ally Hill and Ally Ferraro each scored twice.

In the crease, Jennaca McGill made nine stops in just under 40 minutes of play and Danni Moran made three saves in the final 20-plus minutes. For Western New England, Faith Graveline made eight saves.
