Clarkson Closes Out Non-League Portion of Season with 12-9 Defeat Against Geneseo

Potsdam, NY – Recovering from an early four-goal deficit, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team could never quite find the equalizer in a close game against Geneseo, falling to the visitors 12-9 in non-league action Friday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their mark evened at 5-5 while Geneseo improved to 5-2. Clarkson begins the month of April with a Liberty League game against Vassar College, and the program will celebrate its Class of 2023 on Saturday afternoon.

Three goals in the final four minutes of the first quarter turned a 1-1 tie into a 4-1 advantage for Geneseo, including a goal with one second left on the clock by Molly Brown. Two more goals early in the second quarter, both by Brown, put the tally at 6-2, but the Golden Knights rattled off three straight in a short stretch to pull back within one. Clarkson had some chances to tie, but the next goal came from Geneseo as Tricia Curran found Alaina Reina in transition with 1:26 to go to give the visitors a 7-5 advantage at the half.

At the start of the third quarter, Chrissy Benedict connected with Hailey Millington to put the score at 7-6, but again Geneseo had answers returned the lead to three. However, Clarkson was back within one when Madelynn Barnum scored an unassisted goal at 2:35. Geneseo produced goals at the start of the fourth quarter as Alaina Reina found the net at 10:56 and Molly Brown followed at 8:13 for an 11-8 lead. Sydney Nakas scored with a little over six minutes remaining to pull Clarkson within two, though that turned out to be the final score for the Green and Gold.

Madelynn Barnum had a team-best four points on three goals and an assist and also notched four caused turnovers, three draws, and three groundballs. Mia Petrone had three points with two goals and an assist, Hailey Millington scored twice, and Julia Lavarnway had two assists. Ireland Morgia caused two turnovers and scooped up three groundballs and Sofie Mangino caused three turnovers. Millington also had six draws.

For Geneseo, Molly Brown had a game-best six points with four goals and two assists, while Alaina Reina matched the goal output of Brown and added an assist for five points. Megan Cook also scored twice for Geneseo. Emily Salanger scooped up three groundballs and caused two turnovers, Meg Seeley had four groundballs, and Tricia Curran snagged four draws with three groundballs.

Clarkson out shot Geneseo 28-18 overall and 20-14 with attempts between the pipes, but Maggie Rosaschi denied 11 shots in the crease for the visitors. Clarkson also held the advantage in groundballs (20-16), though Geneseo had a small lead in draw controls (13-11).
