Clarkson Picks Up First Conference Win in 18-11 Victory Over Vassar

Potsdam, NY – For the last few games, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team has been slowed somewhat by opponents, but the Golden Knights broke out on Saturday with a consistent offensive push as the Green and Gold downed Vassar College 18-11 in Liberty League action at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League, while Vassar fell to 5-3 and 2-2. Clarkson plays two more home games next weekend against Skidmore College and Union College before embarking on a three-game road stretch.

After exchanging goals for the first handful of minutes in the first quarter, Clarkson tied the game near the midway point and then scored two more consecutive goals to build a 5-3 lead through the end of the first quarter. Vassar, rallied to tie the game early in the second period, and then tied the game again near the midway mark, but Julia Lavarnway returned the Knights' cushion to two goals when she found Mia Petrone and Lauren Shanahan in the final seven-plus minutes of the second half.

The game was fairly even in the first half, with the two teams separated by just one goal (9-8) and one total shot (14-13), but Clarkson controlled play in the third quarter, winning the first six draws of the period and allowing just two shots from the Brewers for the first 12 minutes. The Knights' offense took advantage, getting goals from five different sources (Sydney Nakas, Chrissy Benedict, Madelynn Barnum, Mia Petrone, and Sofie Mangino) before Vassar decided to take a second timeout in the third quarter. Vassar halted the momentum briefly out of the timeout with a quick goal off the draw to put the margin at four through 45 minutes (14-10).

The Clarkson scoring run was ended only briefly by Vassar at the end of the third, as the Knights tallied four more times in the first seven minutes of the fourth period, widening their advantage to as many as eight goals.

Julia Lavarnway found her teammates for six assists and had seven points overall to lead the Knights, while Madelynn Barnum scored six points on five goals and an assist, while also chipping in four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Sofie Mangino also had a four-point day with three goals and an assist, and Hailey Millington scored three goals. Lauren Shanahan was busy with two goals, three draws, three groundballs, and two caused turnovers, and Rylee Ganter added three caused turnovers and five groundballs. Mia Petrone was strong on draws, winning six times.

For Vassar, Annie Uyeki was the team leader with six points on three goals and three assists. Kateri Sanseviro had three points on two goals and an assist and Maddy Kretten scored twice. Reilly Mulcahy also had two points to go along with four draws and two groundballs.

Overall, Clarkson enjoyed a 31-19 lead in shots (25-14 shots on goal), won 18 of 33 draws, and edged Vassar in groundballs 18-14.
