Welcoming back several graduate students and much of the team's defense, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team seeks its first Liberty League playoff berth since the 2022 season when the Golden Knights open up the 2025 campaign this Wednesday against SUNY Canton.

Guided by third-year head coach Ally Burrows and second-year assistant Georgia Ryan, the Green and Gold will field a squad loaded with veterans, including three graduate students that started a year ago and are expected to again make plenty of impact.

Probably the most significant return for the Knights was midfielder Madelynn Barnum, who returned for a graduate year to fill out her collegiate eligibility. If Barnum had decided to close out her career last season, it would have been an impressive swan song. Barnum led the conference in goals per game (4.13), points per game (4.94) and also ranked in the top five in the conference in groundballs per game (2.38), draw controls per game (5.19), and caused turnovers per game (2.00). She will set her gaze upon becoming Clarkson's all-time leading scorer, as she enters the campaign with 222 points, and will be vying for another Liberty League First-Team All-Star spot as well as regional honors.

Although Barnum lost a pair of offensive threats in Julia Lavarnway (77 points) and Hailey Millington (34 goals), she gains one back in the way of Lauren Shanahan. The junior missed all of last year due to injury, but she was a standout as a freshman, scoring 46 points on 38 goals and eight assists to gain all-star honors in her first season.

Other key offensive contributors in 2025 are junior Brooklynne Perrigo and sophomores Gabby Cranfield and Makenna Cassin. Perrigo posted 16 points on 14 goals and two assists, picking up points against top Liberty League competitors along the way, while Cassin (30 goals) and Cranfield (20 assists) both added to the scoreboard in their own ways. Cassin was particularly important in league games, as she scored at least one goal in nine of 10 conference contests.

On the defensive side, Clarkson returns most of its top defenders. Graduate students Rylee Ganter and Meredith James each started all 16 games a year ago and both ranked in the top five for groundballs a year ago, all of which returned from last season. Ganter was among the Liberty League leaders in both groundballs and caused turnovers and has earned all-star honors from the conference on multiple occasions. Junior Maeve Bartell and senior Julia Patterson were also regular starters on defense and in the midfield, providing further depth for an enviable defense.

In the crease, Clarkson returns all three of its goalkeepers from a year ago. Jenna McGill got most of the starts and played roughly 60% of the team's total minutes with a 12.82 goals against average and 65 saves. Clare Tucker saw time for roughly 250 minutes and Riley Donovan added 110 minutes as the Knights rotated goalies a great deal, with each playing in at least 10 contests last season.
