Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Knights Fall at SLU, 12-6

Canton, NY – After a strong start of four goals in the opening period, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team's offense was shut down by a strong St. Lawrence defense, as the Golden Knights suffered a 12-6 defeat in Liberty League action Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 9-7 overall and 3-6 in the Liberty League and were officially eliminated from postseason contention with the defeat, while St. Lawrence clinched its spot in the league's postseason tournament at 7-8 and 5-4.

In the opening quarter, Clarkson found success with bouncing shots as the first three scores for the Knights hit the ground first to put the Knights up 3-1, with the assists coming from Gabby Cranfield each time. Cranfield scored with 20.4 seconds left off a quick restart and pass from Madelynn Barnum, but St. Lawrence responded with a goal with just five seconds to go to get the margin back to one.

St. Lawrence's defense clamped down in all aspects in the second quarter as the Saints shut out Clarkson in the second 15 minutes. The Knights went without a shot until the final 90 seconds of the period and were outperformed 9-1 in that category in the stanza, while St. Lawrence forced six turnovers. The Saints did just enough on offense to take a three-goal lead into the break, scoring once on a free-position while up a player and then taking advantage of another free-position shot six minutes later.

The third quarter was similar to the second since St. Lawrence maintained its plus-eight shot advantage (11-3) that it had in the second while allowing only two shots on goal and forcing four more turnovers. Cate Rathnam scored three straight goals before the midway point of the quarter to push the lead to 10-4 and Keira Dodd added one more at 6:47 to make it a seven-goal gap.

Clarkson broke its near 32-minute scoring gap with a goal roughly 90 seconds into the fourth when Cranfield and Barnum connected for the third time in the game. Three minutes later it was Barnum passing to Sydney Nakas to draw Clarkson back within five, but a long stretch without a shot on goal virtually ended the hopes of a Golden Knights' comeback.

Gabby Cranfield scored five points on two goals and three assists and Madelynn Barnum tossed in a goal with three assists for four points. Riley Donovan made nine saves for the Knights.
